Tech News: New iPad Mini with OLED Screen Set to Launch in October; Major Upgrades for Other Devices in 2027
Apple’s plans for the upcoming iPad models, including the first OLED iPad mini, are starting to come into focus. According to a recent report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, we can expect the OLED iPad mini to be released this fall, marking the most significant update to the iPad mini in five years.
The new model, known internally as J510, will feature an OLED screen for the first time. OLED technology, short for organic light-emitting diode, is known for providing high-quality visuals and has been used in the iPhone since 2017 and the iPad Pro since 2024.
While there has been speculation that the iPad mini could receive a ProMotion display with a 120 Hz refresh rate, Gurman’s report does not confirm this. Previous reports have suggested that the iPad mini and iPad Air would likely use single-stack Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon (LTPS) displays, which do not support variable refresh rates like ProMotion.
Apple’s decision to introduce OLED technology to the iPad mini is seen as a significant step forward, especially considering the company’s history of using LTPS displays in its devices. The upgrade to OLED is expected to improve the visual experience on the iPad mini, but it is unlikely to include a ProMotion display.
Gurman also shared some insights into Apple’s plans for other iPad models. The entry-level iPad, powered by the A16 chip, is not expected to receive a major refresh until next year. Similarly, the next iPad Pro, likely to feature an M6 chip, is set for a spring 2027 release without any major design changes.
Overall, Apple’s lineup of iPads is expected to see incremental upgrades in the coming years, with a focus on improving performance and features rather than major design changes. While the iPad mini’s transition to OLED is a notable development, other models are likely to follow suit in the future.
In conclusion, Apple’s plans for the iPad lineup indicate a continued commitment to innovation and improvement in the tablet market. With the introduction of OLED technology to the iPad mini and upcoming updates to other models, Apple is poised to remain a key player in the tablet industry for years to come.
