Cliff Bleszinski Opens Up About His Struggle with Alcoholism and Potential Return to Game Development

Renowned game designer Cliff Bleszinski, known for his work on Gears of War and Unreal Tournament, recently shared his battle with alcoholism and how it has affected his life and career in the gaming industry. Bleszinski, who is now four months sober following a drinking-related seizure earlier this year, is contemplating a comeback to game development.

In a candid interview with Brian Crecente for 80 Level, Bleszinski detailed his long-standing struggle with alcohol addiction, which he traces back to his time working on Unreal Tournament in the early 2000s. He admitted that the Gears of War trilogy was developed while he was a functioning alcoholic, and later transitioned into a non-functioning alcoholic.

Reflecting on the industry’s drinking culture, Bleszinski acknowledged his own role in fueling his addiction, citing a high tolerance that allowed him to gather sensitive information while others were intoxicated. However, the failure of his game LawBreakers and the subsequent closure of Boss Key Productions took a toll on him, leading to a period of deep introspection.

After the closure of Boss Key Productions, Bleszinski found himself at a crossroads, unsure of his next steps. Fortunately, he has since made significant progress in his recovery and is contemplating a return to game development. While he rules out developing a player-vs-player game, he expresses a preference for player-vs-environment games, citing the enduring popularity of Horde mode in Gears of War.

It is heartening to see Bleszinski’s journey towards recovery and self-improvement. Whether he decides to re-enter the gaming industry or pursue other interests, his commitment to a healthier lifestyle is commendable.
