Apple has long been rumored to be considering a hardware subscription service, with previous reports suggesting the idea had been shelved. However, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, a new “Apple Upgrade” leasing program is set to launch next week, supporting various Apple products.

The new program, expected to start on July 28, will replace the existing iPhone Upgrade Program and will be in partnership with Klarna. This marks a departure from Apple’s previous financial services ventures, such as the short-lived Apple Pay Later BNPL service.

Unlike the earlier program, Apple Upgrade will offer users the flexibility to pay off devices early, upgrade to new models, or keep the device at the end of the lease term. Standard lease terms will be 24 months for iPhones and Apple Watches, and 36 months for Macs and iPads.

Apple Upgrade will not include AppleCare and will have restrictions on eligible devices and purchases. The primary selling point will be lower payments compared to alternatives, with Apple discontinuing its standard financing plans.

Apple Card holders may still benefit from special zero percent interest arrangements, but will need to put the full cost of the device on their card. Overall, the program aims to offer a convenient and cost-effective option for Apple device upgrades.
