Crackdown on Illegal Live Streaming of FIFA World Cup Matches
The US Department of Justice recently announced the successful seizure of over 1,000 internet domains involved in the illegal live streaming of the 2026 FIFA World Cup matches. Operation Offsides, a multi-phase government operation, targeted these domains over the course of the month-long competition. The operation, led by the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations, aimed to protect property holders and combat organized cybercrime.
Collaboration Leads to Consumer Protection
Key international organizations such as FIFA, beIN Media Group, NBCUniversal, and the Motion Picture Association played a pivotal role in supporting federal authorities to identify and dismantle the illegal streaming platforms. The authorities highlighted the importance of this crackdown in safeguarding sports fans from cybersecurity threats and protecting intellectual property rights. Pirate portals often serve as conduits for malware, financial scams, and identity theft. Operation Red Card, a collaborative effort with foreign partners in Latin America, also successfully halted numerous cross-border pirated streams.
