10 MOST DEPRECIATING BMWS

Luxury car buyers often face the inevitable reality of depreciation, but some BMW models lose value at a much faster rate than others. According to iSeeCars’ 2026 resale-value study, certain BMWs retain between 26.4 and 43.6 percent of their original value after five years, translating to over 56 percent depreciation. Interestingly, nine out of the ten worst-performing BMW models are either fully electric or plug-in hybrids.

The BMW i7 stands out as the worst performer, holding onto only 26.4 percent of its original price after five years. In fact, the i5, iX, and i7 each lose over two-thirds of their value within the same timeframe. This trend continues with the BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid, retaining 43.6 percent of its value after five years, slightly lower than its conventional counterpart.

Moving on to the BMW XM, the model retains 41.9 percent of its original value, indicating a substantial 58.1 percent depreciation over five years. The BMW 5 Series Plug-in Hybrid follows suit, with a 59.2 percent depreciation rate. The conventional BMW 7 Series, the only non-electrified model in the bottom 10, retains just 38.2 percent of its original value after five years.

The BMW i4 is projected to retain 35.5 percent of its value, significantly lower than its gasoline-powered counterparts. Similarly, the electric BMW i3 retains only 35.1 percent of its original value after five years, despite its cult following. The BMW 7 Series Plug-in Hybrid and the BMW iX follow with depreciation rates of 65.1% and 68.6%, respectively.

The BMW i5 is expected to retain only 30 percent of its original value after five years, highlighting the challenges faced by electric luxury sedans in the resale market. Finally, the BMW i7 takes the lead in depreciation, retaining just 26.4 percent of its MSRP after five years, making it the fastest depreciating BMW model.

Overall, the data suggests that electrified BMW models face a significant resale penalty compared to their conventional counterparts. While high depreciation rates may not reflect the quality of the vehicles, they can influence purchasing decisions. It’s essential for buyers to consider these factors when deciding between leasing and purchasing.
