Revolutionizing Respiratory Diagnostics: TidalSense Secures €16.6 Million in Funding

TidalSense, formerly known as Cambridge Respiratory Innovations, a company based in Cambridge, has secured a funding round of €16.6 million ($19 million) to expedite the commercialization of its AI-powered respiratory diagnostic technology in the UK and to expand its global reach, including the USA.

The funding round included investments from Cross-Border Impact Ventures, a new investor, as well as returning investors such as BGF, Airstream Capital, and Foresight Group. This latest funding brings TidalSense’s total funding to €35.1 million ($40 million), which includes €9.6 million ($11 million) in grant funding from organizations like Innovate UK, SBRI, NIHR, and Asthma-Lung UK. In 2023, the company previously closed an €8.6 million fundraising round led by investors BGF and Downing.

Dr. Ameera Patel, the CEO of TidalSense, highlighted the importance of addressing respiratory diseases, which have historically been overlooked compared to other health issues like cancer and cardiovascular diseases. The World Health Organization now recognizes COPD as a global health priority, signaling a positive shift in awareness. COPD, which is the third leading cause of death in the UK, affects approximately 30,000 individuals annually, costing the NHS billions. TidalSense points out that a significant portion of NHS regions lack the capacity to meet the demand for spirometry testing, with an estimated 1.9 million people living with undiagnosed or diagnosed COPD.

TidalSense’s N-Tidal Diagnose offers a non-invasive alternative to traditional spirometry tests, allowing patients to breathe normally into a handheld device for 75 seconds. The device captures a CO₂ waveform, which is analyzed by AI models to detect COPD. The company emphasizes the simplicity of using the device, requiring only a 10-minute training session for healthcare professionals with no specialized qualifications.

In a post-market validation study presented at the European Respiratory Society Congress in 2025, N-Tidal Diagnose demonstrated over 90% accuracy in diagnosing COPD across key metrics.

TidalSense’s N-Tidal Diagnose software received the first non-spirometry AI diagnostic device CE mark under the EU MDR for COPD in March 2025 and was subsequently launched in the NHS in September 2025. The software has been adopted by healthcare facilities in various regions, including Suffolk, North-East Essex, NHS Wales, community lung screening clinics in the South of England, and Glasgow.
