HomePod: Apple’s Answer to Google and Amazon’s Smart Home Devices

Rumors have been circulating for years about a new home hub device from Apple that is set to rival smart home devices like the Google Nest Hub Mini and Amazon’s Echo Show. Details have been scarce, with the device often referred to as “HomePod with a screen.” However, a recent report from Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman has shed some light on the alleged device and a potential release timeframe.

According to Gurman, the new smart hub is rumored to feature a 7-inch square display and a new operating system based on Apple’s tvOS. The interface will include “grids of icons, widgets, and apps” similar to iOS and WatchOS. The device is expected to be powered by an upgraded Siri AI and will offer video chat, security, and intercom features that can communicate with other Apple Home devices. Additionally, the device will have the ability to personalize the interface, adjusting text and icon size based on the user.

This rumored smart hub is part of Apple’s larger push into the smart home market. While the company has previously relied on third-party accessories, the enhanced Siri AI set to launch in September may give Apple the confidence to compete in the space. Originally slated for a Spring 2025 reveal, the launch was postponed to coincide with the release of iOS 27 and Siri AI.

In addition to the new Home Hub, Apple is reportedly preparing to launch its own high-end security camera to rival Amazon’s Ring system, a new Apple TV device, and a new HomePod mini. There are also rumors of a potential Apple robotic arm with a screen in the works. While there is a possibility of further delays, Gurman anticipates an announcement between October and early next year.
