Apple launches ‘Upgrade’ program to lease new devices

Apple Launches New Apple Upgrade Leasing Program

Apple has recently unveiled its latest offering, the “Apple Upgrade” leasing program. This innovative service is designed to simplify the process of acquiring the newest iPhone, Mac, iPad, and Apple Watch models. Similar to a car lease, users have the flexibility to keep the device at the end of the subscription period, pay it off early, or upgrade to a newer model.

Response to Price Hikes and Supply Chain Issues

The introduction of the Apple Upgrade program comes shortly after Apple raised prices on its MacBooks, iPads, and other products due to ongoing memory and storage shortages. While iPhones remained unaffected, CEO Tim Cook cautioned about the sustainability of the situation, hinting at potential price increases for the upcoming iPhone 18 series.

Program Details and Availability

The Apple Upgrade program will be accessible online and in physical Apple stores, with Klarna acting as the financial partner. Interested users will undergo a soft credit check for approval. The leasing options include 24-month plans for iPhones and Apple Watches, and 36-month plans for Macs and iPads.

Leasing Prices and Options

Monthly leasing fees start as low as $17.99 for the iPhone 17e, $11.99 for the Apple Watch Series 11, $24.99 for the MacBook Air, and $11.99 for the iPad Air. At the end of the lease term, customers can upgrade to the latest model, make a one-time purchase, or return the device.

Apple Upgrade vs. iPhone Upgrade Program

The new Apple Upgrade program replaces the older iPhone Upgrade Program and offers a wider range of devices. Notably, Apple Upgrade does not include AppleCare, the warranty extension plan that recently saw price hikes. The program aligns with Apple’s aim to provide an in-house alternative to carrier upgrade plans.

Ensuring Timely Payments

Users should stay current on payments, as a recent iOS 27 beta hinted at a feature that could restrict access to apps on financed iPhones if payments are overdue. Apple’s new leasing service represents a strategic move to enhance user experience and accessibility to its latest technology offerings.
