Belgian AI dental startup Relu lands €1.51 million to accelerate US expansion

Relu Secures €1.51 Million Investment from Dental Innovation Alliance

Relu, an AI startup based in Leuven, is revolutionizing the dental industry by automating dental design and planning workflows. Recently, the company announced a strategic investment of €1.51 million ($1.75 million) from Dental Innovation Alliance (DIA), a venture capital fund based in North Carolina.

DIA focuses on investing in technologies and solutions within the dental and multi-site healthcare industry. This investment will enable Relu to strengthen its position in the US market, following a previous €2 million Seed funding round in March 2023, also supported by DIA.

CEO and co-founder of Relu, Holger Willems, expressed the impact of AI on dental labs, stating that technicians adopting Relu’s technology become significantly more productive, allowing for increased case production. This investment will facilitate the expansion of Relu’s services to more American labs.

Founded in 2019 by Willems, Adriaan Van Gerven, Antoine Coppens, and Thomas Beznik, Relu specializes in developing AI solutions to enhance dental designs in orthodontics and implant-restorative dentistry. The company’s flagship product, Relu® Automate, automates design and administrative tasks for dental lab cases, offering a pay-per-case model that streamlines workflow processes.

Relu addresses the shortage of skilled dental technicians by utilizing AI to analyze 3D scans and generate patient-specific designs like night guards, surgical guides, and crowns. This automation eliminates manual CAD steps, enabling labs to process cases more efficiently without compromising quality.

Moreover, Relu provides implantologists and dental labs with an AI-powered system that generates comprehensive treatment proposals, combining various elements such as CBCT segmentation, implant positioning, and crown design into a unified experience.

The company collaborates with leading dental software providers and labs to integrate AI planning and design automation into existing workflows. Relu’s commitment to innovation is evident through its recent CE certification for AI automatic implant planning solutions.

Thomas Sharpe, Managing Partner at Dental Innovation Alliance, emphasized the success of Relu’s technology and its adoption by leading American labs, reaffirming DIA’s support for the company’s growth.

Relu’s expansion in the US market is part of its strategic plan, as the company continues to handle over 1 million cases annually from dental labs in 82 countries. With offices in Leuven, Belgium, and Boston, MA, Relu’s platform is backed by 33 peer-reviewed publications and holds ISO 13485 certification, FDA 510(k) clearance, and CE marking.
