Mark Zuckerberg’s yacht was closer, but someone else saved a stranded boat

The Alaskan Cruise Ship Wilderness Legacy Rescues a Stranded Skiff

Earlier this week, the Alaskan cruise ship Wilderness Legacy came to the aid of a small skiff that had run out of fuel near Farragut Bay. Surprisingly, the closest vessel in the vicinity was revealed to be Mark Zuckerberg’s super yacht, Launchpad, according to tracking data analyzed by the Alaska Beacon and Halifax Shipping News.

Passenger Accounts of the Rescue Mission

Michael Love, a passenger aboard the Wilderness Legacy, took to Bluesky to share his perspective. He mentioned that the captain of the cruise ship acknowledged that the Launchpad was actually closer to the distressed skiff but failed to respond to the situation, eliciting disapproval from the passengers. The AIS tracking data corroborates this account, showing the Launchpad initially approaching the troubled vessel but then halting near the bay entrance. Ultimately, it was the Wilderness Legacy that took action, passing the Launchpad to tow the stranded boat to safety.

Response from Authorities and Mark Zuckerberg’s Camp

Despite the incident, neither the US Coast Guard nor the Marine Exchange of Alaska provided immediate comments. However, Coast Guard Public Affairs Specialist Shannon Shepard informed the Alaska Beacon that a marine assistance request broadcast was issued when it was determined that the distressed boat was not in immediate danger.

In response to inquiries, Brian Baker, spokesperson for Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, clarified to The Verge that the couple was not present on the Launchpad during the rescue. Baker emphasized that the Coast Guard confirmed the absence of distress signals from the skiff and by the time the crew of the Launchpad was made aware of the situation, assistance was already underway. Gratitude was expressed for the safe resolution of the incident.
