Sony Introduces Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) for PlayStation 5
Sony has recently unveiled Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a modified version of the PS5 Pro’s PSSR and Project Amethyst, designed to be compatible with the base PlayStation 5. This innovative technology has been integrated into popular titles such as Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, with plans for wider implementation across all developers on the platform.
While the PS5 Pro features dedicated hardware for PSSR upscaling, the original PS5 lacks this capability due to using an earlier generation GPU. However, Sony and AMD have collaborated on Project Amethyst to enhance PSSR by incorporating “A streamlined neural network architecture” and “A hand-tuned implementation” to optimize performance on the PS5.
QSSR relies on FP16 due to the PS5 GPU lacking INT8 function support, resulting in a boost in detail and clarity for enhanced gaming experiences. Despite the improvements, the added performance burden for PS5 games remains unclear, as implementing QSSR will require developers to release patches for their games to leverage this technology effectively.
In testing scenarios, Digital Foundry observed differences in frame rates and frame time when comparing upscaled resolutions using QSSR. While Marvel’s Wolverine showed an 8-10FPS difference and increased frame time when upscaled to 1440p, Ghost of Yotei did not exhibit significant changes in performance when transitioning from FSR3 to QSSR.
Furthermore, the introduction of QSSR is expected to benefit PC gamers using Radeon RX 6000 series GPUs. With FSR4 being made available for older GPU models, including the RX 7000 series, and a promise from AMD to bring FSR4 to RX 6000 GPUs in early 2027, the connection between FSR4 and QSSR is evident.
Overall, QSSR represents a significant advancement in upscaling technology, offering improved visual quality and performance enhancements for both PlayStation 5 and PC gamers. This development underscores Sony and AMD’s commitment to enhancing the gaming experience through cutting-edge technologies.
