Skoda brings Communist-era coupe into the modern age

The Skoda 1000 MBX Concept: A Modern Take on a Classic

Skoda has unveiled its latest concept car, the Skoda 1000 MBX, as part of its ‘Icons Get a Makeover’ series. This digital concept pays homage to a rare coupe from the mid-60s.

Designed by a small team at Skoda, the concept was brought to life by Antti Savio, the exterior designer. Drawing inspiration from brutalist buildings, Savio aimed to capture the elegance and charm of sports cars from the ’60s and ’70s, steering away from the aggressive designs of modern vehicles.

David Stingl, the interior designer, highlighted that the original 1000 MBX was known for its elegance and practicality rather than being a high-performance machine.

Unlike a retro recreation, the modern concept focuses on embodying the essence of the original model. It features four sliding doors and a rear cargo area designed to accommodate items like a bike.

One of the unique elements of the Skoda 1000 MBX concept is its glass-covered tube dashboard, where displays are projected, offering a futuristic touch to the interior.

Built on an electric vehicle platform, the concept boasts a flat floor and air suspension for versatile driving capabilities. The absence of a center console and the use of a front bench seat add to the comfort and practicality of the design.

The original Skoda 1000 MBX, launched in 1966, was a two-door version of the company’s rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive sedan. With a 998cc engine initially, it later received a larger 1.1-liter engine in 1968, becoming the 1100 MBX.

Production of the MBX ceased in 1969, with only a limited number of units produced. Skoda describes the original model as capturing the carefree spirit of its time, reflecting the social and economic climate of the late ’60s.
