The Prosecution Presents: iPhone & Apple Watch Data in the Murder Trial
In the ongoing murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, prosecutors are utilizing health data extracted from an Apple Watch as crucial evidence. This data, along with the history of iPhone Messages, is shedding light on the accused’s final actions before the tragic triple homicide of her children. Lindsay Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, stands accused of the 2023 murder of three children in Massachusetts, followed by a suicide attempt.
E! News has reported that the prosecution, on the last day of presenting its case, presented phone calls, internet searches, and health data from the accused’s Apple Watch as evidence.
iPhone Data
The prosecution called digital forensics expert Ian Whiffin from Cellebrite to the stand to discuss various aspects, including the accused’s search history. Cellebrite, an Israeli company, is renowned for extracting information from locked iPhones.
According to NBC Boston, Whiffin testified that Lindsay had made several online searches about drugs and medication leading up to her children’s deaths. Searches included queries like “how quickly does wellbutrin work for depression” and “ketamine for suicidal ideation.” On the day of the murders, searches were made for “Kids miralax” and “CVS pharmacy.”
Regarding call records, Whiffin revealed that Clancy’s iPhone was last unlocked at 5:13 p.m. on January 24, 2023. An unanswered call from her ex-husband Patrick came in at 5:33 p.m., followed by a short outbound call back to Patrick. At 6:09 p.m., another unanswered call was received from Patrick’s number.
Apple Watch Data
Whiffin also discussed the data captured by the accused’s Apple Watch, particularly in the Apple Health app on her iPhone. The data indicated her last recorded heart rate was 57 beats per minute, considered low for Clancy.
She was recorded climbing two flights of stairs at 5:03 p.m. and 5:33 p.m. (Apple devices can track steps and elevation changes even without an Apple Watch.)
This trial has seen recurrent use of data from iPhones and Apple Watches. In the third week of the trial, the final texts exchanged between Lindsay and Patrick were read in court. Hours before the tragic events, Lindsay had asked Patrick about take-out food.
The prosecution has interpreted this take-out discussion as a ploy by Lindsay to send Patrick away, leaving her alone with the children to commit the crime.
In notes from the iPhone created in preceding months, one revealed Lindsay’s anxiety and request for Zoloft from her psychiatrist. The note indicated a downward spiral starting on January 23, the day before the murders.
The Defense Responds
During his defense presentation, attorney Kevin Reddington challenged the prosecution’s data claims, highlighting discrepancies in the recording times of the devices. The Apple Watch stopped recording data at 5:23 p.m., while the iPhone ceased at 5:38 p.m.
While acknowledging the accuracy of stair climbing data, Reddington pointed out discrepancies in heart rate recording by the Apple Watch and step counting by both devices.
Reddington did not dispute Lindsay’s actions but argued that her postpartum psychosis rendered her incapable of criminal responsibility at the time of the murders.
On the prosecution’s side, they allege that Lindsay meticulously planned and executed the murders of her three children before attempting suicide. If convicted, Lindsay Clancy faces life imprisonment without parole.
The trial is ongoing.
