Apple launches new Mac Studios with its ‘most powerful chip ever’ — the M5 Ultra

New Mac Studio Models Unveiled by Apple

Apple has announced the launch of new versions of the Mac Studio, featuring the M5 Max chip and a brand new M5 Ultra chip. This move marks a return to a unified chip generation for the Mac Studio, following a period where the Studio was divided between the M4 Max and M3 Ultra options. Interestingly, the older-sounding M3 Ultra was actually more powerful than the M4 Max, despite the naming convention. The new Mac Studios maintain the same design as previous models, including the small-form-factor chassis introduced in 2022 and the presence of USB-A ports on the rear. However, internally, they are powered by Apple’s most powerful SoCs.

Specifications and Pricing

The new Mac Studio with the M5 Max chip offers 36GB of unified memory and 512GB of storage, starting at $2,499. This aligns with the starting price of the M4 Max model after a price increase earlier in the year. The higher-end M5 Ultra model, priced at $5,499, comes with 96GB of memory and 1TB of storage. Despite being $200 more expensive than the outgoing M3 Ultra model, it is worth noting that the M3 Ultra was initially launched at a significantly lower price of $3,999.

Release Date and Features

The new Mac Studios are set to be released with macOS 27 Golden Gate on September 22nd, alongside the new Mac Minis. The highest-end configuration of the M5 Ultra with 512GB of memory is expected to be available in late October, with pricing yet to be determined. Apple warns consumers to prepare for potentially high prices.

Performance Upgrades

The new Mac Studios boast significant performance enhancements. While the RAM and storage capacities remain the same as previous models, the storage speed has doubled. Apple claims that the M5 Ultra offers up to 4.3x faster AI compute compared to its predecessor. Additionally, the M5 Ultra features a 36-core CPU and an 80-core GPU, resulting in graphics that are 1.8x faster and CPU speeds that are 1.3x faster than the M3 Ultra. The memory bandwidth of the M5 Ultra has been increased to 1.2TB per second, surpassing the 819GB per second of the M3 Ultra.

Technological Advancements

Apple has achieved these performance improvements in the M5 Ultra by utilizing the next-gen UltraFusion connection, which combines two dual-die M5 Max chips into a quad-die architecture. This innovation has led Apple to dub the M5 Ultra as “the most powerful chip ever.” In addition to performance upgrades, the new Mac Studios also offer Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 support for enhanced connectivity.

Final Thoughts

With the discontinuation of the Mac Pro line, the Mac Studios now represent the pinnacle of Apple’s computing power. Despite their compact size, the Studios pack a punch and are capable of supporting multiple high-resolution monitors. However, the increased performance comes at a cost, with the new models being significantly more expensive than their predecessors. Consumers should be prepared for the higher price tag associated with these cutting-edge devices.
