Gift card fraud is on the rise, making physical gift cards a riskier purchase than ever before. Criminals are finding new ways to steal redemption codes, making the cards worthless before the intended recipient even gets a chance to use them.

While retailers have attempted to prevent gift card theft by only activating them at the point of purchase, scammers have found a low-tech workaround. A recent report from Australia’s ABC News sheds light on the increasing problem of gift card tampering. In one particular incident, a man was caught on camera at a Coles supermarket removing Apple Gift Cards from his pockets, tampering with the codes, and then placing them back on the racks for unsuspecting customers to buy.

Once the tampered cards are activated at the register, the thieves can use the stolen codes to drain the funds, leaving the buyer with an empty gift card. This scam is not new, but it is becoming more widespread. In fact, Homeland Security in the US has been investigating this issue for years and has linked it to various criminal activities like money laundering, human trafficking, and even murder.

In a recent case, a man was arrested after Coles collaborated with the police to catch him in the act of tampering with gift cards. Upon searching his home, law enforcement found a stash of 47 tampered iTunes (Apple) gift cards, valued between $100 and $500 each. The man claimed he was working for an unnamed criminal syndicate.

The investigation revealed that organized crime syndicates, often involving young Chinese nationals, were behind the gift card fraud. While it’s unclear how the crooks know when the cards are activated, it is suspected that they use automated bots to test the codes regularly.

Apple has made efforts to improve the security of its gift card packaging, but criminals continue to find ways to circumvent these measures. Being a victim of gift card fraud can have serious consequences, as one individual discovered when he was locked out of his Apple account after trying to redeem a tampered gift card.

To avoid falling victim to gift card scams, it’s advisable to opt for digital gift cards whenever possible. If you prefer physical gift cards, consider ordering directly from Apple’s website or purchasing from reputable retailers like the Apple Store where security measures are stricter. Always inspect the card and its packaging for any signs of tampering before making a purchase.
