New Amazon Board Member Kevin Mandia: A Cybersecurity Veteran

Amazon recently appointed cybersecurity expert Kevin Mandia to its board of directors, reinforcing its security expertise following the departure of former NSA director Keith Alexander.

Mandia is the founder of Mandiant, a breach-investigation firm that Google acquired for $5.4 billion in 2022. He continued as a strategic advisor at Google until July 2025 and now leads Armadin, an AI security startup established in the previous year.

In a statement, Amazon highlighted the critical importance of cybersecurity in today’s rapidly evolving threat landscape, noting that organizations face significant risks that continue to evolve alongside advancements in AI.

With Mandia’s appointment, Amazon brings in extensive experience in investigating corporate breaches, complementing the cybersecurity expertise previously added to the board with Alexander’s election in 2020.

Mandia’s background as an AI security entrepreneur aligns well with Amazon’s cloud infrastructure, which plays a substantial role in supporting a significant portion of the internet. Armadin, founded in 2025, utilizes AI to simulate attacks on corporate networks, enhancing defenses against potential intrusions.

As a member of the board, Mandia joins the Security Committee, chaired by Dan Huttenlocher, dean of the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing. The committee oversees Amazon’s cybersecurity policies and response to cyber incidents, with former Bridgewater co-CEO Jon Rubinstein also joining as a member.

Furthermore, Amazon appointed Mandia to the board’s Audit Committee, as disclosed in a securities filing.

In connection with his board election, Mandia received 4,086 restricted stock units, vesting in three equal annual installments starting Nov. 15, 2027. The shares, valued at approximately $1.03 million based on Amazon’s closing price, were granted to him.

The filing also revealed that Mandia’s sister-in-law, Kristin Mandia, is an Amazon employee earning an annual salary of $185,000. Amazon affirmed that her compensation aligns with that of other employees at her level with similar responsibilities.
