Rising Victoria Car Theft Cases Spark Concerns as Election Approaches
Victoria’s Car Theft Crisis: A Growing Concern
The state of Victoria is currently facing a significant issue with car theft, as recent data from the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) has identified it as the nation’s car-theft capital. The alarming rate of car theft in Victoria has prompted the ICA to prioritize it on their state election action list.
According to the latest figures, more than 12,300 motor vehicle theft and burglary insurance claims were filed in Victoria in the 12 months leading up to June 30, 2026, costing insurers a total of $244 million. This represents a nine percent increase compared to the previous financial year.
The trend of rising car theft incidents is particularly concerning in metropolitan areas of Victoria, in contrast to the declining vehicle-theft claims in other states and territories across Australia.
During the first half of 2026, the number of car theft claims in Victoria surged by 28 percent, while New South Wales saw a corresponding decrease of the same proportion.
Despite Queensland recording more vehicle-theft claims than Victoria in 2023, the state has managed to reduce them, whereas Victoria’s rate continues to climb. This upward trend has resulted in a 26 percent increase in the cost of vehicle-theft claims in Victoria during the first half of 2026, marking a significant 168 percent rise since 2022.
Andrew Hall, CEO of the ICA, expressed grave concern over the situation, stating that a car is stolen or broken into every 43 minutes in Victoria. He highlighted the fact that Melbourne alone now surpasses all other capital cities combined in terms of cars stolen or broken into annually.
In response to these concerning statistics, the ICA has outlined 10 policy recommendations in their report, “A Safer and Stronger Victoria,” released ahead of the state election scheduled for Saturday, November 28, 2026. The organization is calling for action from Victoria’s next government to address the issue and improve safety measures.
The report also points out that Victorian motorists pay the second-highest insurance premiums in Australia, with the average comprehensive policy costing $1285.
To combat vehicle theft and property crime, the ICA has proposed several measures, including the implementation of a statewide strategy, enhanced intelligence sharing, targeted prevention initiatives, and investments in specialized law enforcement capabilities.
Victoria Police recently launched an online stolen-vehicle database that allows users to check if a vehicle has been reported stolen by entering its registration, make, and model. This tool aims to facilitate the recovery of stolen vehicles and deter potential thefts.
Furthermore, Toyota Australia introduced a new anti-theft device for the LandCruiser 300 Series and LandCruiser Prado 250 Series in response to a spike in thefts of Toyota vehicles, such as the RAV4 SUV and HiLux ute.
As efforts continue to address the car theft crisis in Victoria, it is crucial for the government and relevant authorities to collaborate on implementing effective measures to enhance security, reduce theft incidents, and ultimately lower insurance costs for all Victorians.
