Edo Roadster Pebble Beach Concept Unveils Innovative Removable Z4 Roof Design

Atelier Edo Popken revealed the Edo Roadster “Pebble Beach” Concept in Munich, coinciding with the nine-year anniversary of BMW’s showcase of the Concept Z4 at the renowned Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2017. Unlike the original Concept Z4, which lacked a windshield frame, soft-top, and rollover hoops, rendering it impractical for real-world use, Popken’s rendition maintains the sleek speedster silhouette while ensuring the car remains street-legal with the factory soft-top intact.

The highlight of the concept is the carbon-fiber speedster tail that seamlessly attaches over the rear deck and can be detached in under 100 seconds, conveniently stowing in a designated spot in the trunk. Popken’s aim was to design a component that not only enhances the vehicle’s overall appearance but is also easy to handle and store, exuding sophistication and exclusivity.

Accentuated by a bicolor paint scheme, the speedster cover visually distinguishes itself from the rest of the body, emphasizing the speedster fairings and elongating the car’s rear. Utilizing production-grade mounting hardware, including CNC-machined aluminum brackets and titanium screws, ensures a secure attachment.

Distinctive Design Elements

The exterior flaunts an Orange Énergétique satin finish, chosen to accentuate the car’s proportions subtly. Inside, Atelier Edo Popken maintains the asymmetric cabin split from the original concept, incorporating leather and Alcantara unevenly between the driver and passenger sides for a driver-centric layout. The tailored Alcantara accents extend into the trunk area, showcasing meticulous attention to detail.

The concept is based on the Leggera-spec Edo Roadster with a manual gearbox, focusing on targeted weight reductions in unsprung and rotating mass through forged alloy wheels and titanium hardware to enhance agility and response without compromising daily drivability.

This unique concept is a one-of-one creation, with the carbon speedster cover available as an option for future Edo Roadster models but not for standard-production BMW Z4s, maintaining its exclusivity within the low-volume coachbuilt program. Each Edo Roadster is crafted as a bespoke creation, ensuring that buyers invest in a truly unique build rather than a mere aftermarket addition.
