BMW is actively progressing with the development of the iX5 Hydrogen, as the prototypes have commenced real-world testing before the anticipated launch later this decade. While the focus of the fuel cell luxury SUV is on efficiency, early indications suggest strong performance capabilities.

The Munich-based company is targeting a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) acceleration in under five seconds for the iX5 Hydrogen, putting it in the same performance league as the battery-powered iX5. The vehicle will come equipped with xDrive, with one electric motor powering the front wheels and another the rear axle.

Although speed is not the primary selling point, efficiency takes center stage for the iX5 Hydrogen. BMW aims for a range of 466 miles (750 kilometers) on a single fill-up in the WLTP cycle, showcasing its commitment to eco-friendly driving. In comparison, the iX5 60 xDrive with a 141-kWh battery can travel up to 525 miles.

Efficient Refueling Process

Refilling the hydrogen tanks is expected to take less than five minutes, offering a similar convenience to refueling a traditional gasoline or diesel vehicle. The iX5 Hydrogen boasts seven high-pressure carbon-fiber tanks capable of storing up to 7 kilograms of hydrogen, all without compromising passenger space. BMW’s third-generation fuel cell system, developed in collaboration with Toyota, is 25% smaller than its predecessor.

The prototypes are undergoing rigorous testing to ensure seamless integration of the fuel cell and electric motors under various environmental conditions. Engineers are focusing on driving dynamics to deliver a true BMW experience with the hydrogen-powered X5.

The Future of Hydrogen Technology

The viability of hydrogen as an alternative to battery power hinges on infrastructure and hydrogen availability. BMW is betting on customer interest in a zero-emission vehicle with long range and rapid refueling times.

While the iX5 Hydrogen remains in the prototype phase, real-world testing signifies significant progress toward a potential showroom debut. The fifth powertrain option for the luxury SUV may not be globally available until at least 2028, considering the need for sufficient hydrogen refueling stations in target markets.
