Revolutionizing Data Security: Accelerating Innovation in an Evolving Landscape
The Evolving Landscape of Enterprise Data Security
By Bennett Indart, Vice President, SaltGrain Zero-Trust Data Security Suite, Head of Scale Academy, NTT Research
Entrepreneurs constantly face the challenge of staying ahead of evolving threats in the cybersecurity realm. The current state of enterprise data security requires precision in understanding the rapidly changing threat landscape. The nature of threats is evolving at a pace that surpasses the capability of most security defenses to adapt.
Today, enterprise data security is confronted with two major challenges. The first being the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on cybersecurity. Attackers now possess tools that can condense tasks that previously required skilled teams weeks to execute into a matter of hours. This includes activities like reconnaissance, credential stuffing, personalized phishing attacks, and vulnerability scanning across numerous endpoints, all of which can now be automated and continuously improved upon.
While defenders are also leveraging AI, the key difference lies in the asymmetry between attackers and defenders. An attacker only needs to exploit a single vulnerability, whereas defenders must secure all possible gaps. AI has drastically reduced the time it takes for attackers to identify and exploit vulnerabilities, outpacing the efforts of most organizations to fortify their defenses.
The second challenge is the impending impact of quantum computing on data encryption. Presently, public-key encryption methods are considered unbreakable using classical computers. However, the emergence of a powerful quantum computer could change this scenario, rendering encrypted data vulnerable to decryption. This introduces the concept of “harvest now, decrypt later,” where cybercriminals are already stealing encrypted data in anticipation of a future quantum computing breakthrough.
The combination of AI advancements and the potential impact of quantum computing signifies the inadequacy of traditional security approaches that rely on perimeter defense and network trust. The rapid erosion of perimeters by AI and the threat of encrypted data decryption by quantum computers necessitate a proactive and adaptable security posture.
So, what does preparedness entail in this evolving landscape? Enterprises can take several foundational steps regardless of the specific technologies they opt for:
Firstly, understanding the sensitivity and longevity of different types of data is crucial. Not all data carries the same risk, and efforts should be focused where they are most needed.
Secondly, integrating cryptographic agility into procurement and infrastructure decisions enables seamless adoption of post-quantum algorithms as they mature.
Thirdly, implementing data-centric access controls instead of relying solely on network boundaries enhances security as data interacts with diverse environments.
Lastly, scrutinizing vendors’ claims regarding quantum readiness and timelines is essential to make informed decisions.
The concept of “sovereign data,” where access controls travel with the data itself, emerges as a robust design principle in this context. Data that carries its access policies ensures protection regardless of its location or interactions, safeguarding it from unauthorized access.
At NTT Research’s Scale Academy, our focus is on translating fundamental research findings into practical technologies for enterprises. Our flagship product, SaltGrain, embodies the sovereign-data security approach by linking encryption to policies rather than identities, ensuring data protection irrespective of its environment. This exemplifies the feasibility of implementing cutting-edge security measures in the face of AI and quantum threats.
