Dutch AgTech Gravity Gardens Raises €2.6 Million to Expand Sustainable Seed Activation Technology

Gravity Gardens, a startup based in Nijmegen specializing in AgTech, has successfully raised a Seed round of €2.6 million to introduce a revolutionary seed activation technology to the European market. This innovative dry process improves seed establishment without the need for water, chemicals, or coatings, offering a sustainable solution for arable and horticultural crops.

The funding for this round includes equity investment as well as support from the EFRO regional development fund. Notable investors in this round include VP Capital, Brightlands Venture Partners (BVP), and Graduate Ventures, along with a group of private investors. With previous backing from StartLife and a Rabobank innovation loan, Gravity Gardens has now raised over €3 million in total.

Erica van Eeghen, Senior Manager Ventures at VP Capital, praised Gravity Gardens for their impactful innovation in seed technology. The company, founded in 2024 by Paulino Valdés and Robin Le Vigouroux, has developed a seed activation process that is entirely dry, eliminating the need for water, chemicals, or coatings on the seeds. This technology was developed in collaboration with the European Space Agency Business Incubation Centre (ESA BIC) Noordwijk.

Traditional seed priming methods have typically involved wet processes that can be costly and complex. Gravity Gardens’ dry activation process changes the economics by removing the need for hydration and drying stages. This innovative approach focuses on improving the vigor of crops, enhancing their speed and strength of establishment in the ground.

Paulino Valdés, CEO of Gravity Gardens, emphasized the importance of vigor in seed quality and crop performance. By offering a cost-effective dry activation solution, Gravity Gardens aims to make this technology accessible to a wider range of crops, moving away from the limitations of traditional wet priming methods.

The company has conducted seven external trials to validate its technology, working with partners such as Vertify. Gravity Gardens operates its own research, development, and production facility in Nijmegen, collaborating with organizations like HLB, Oost NL, and Foodvalley to drive innovation in the agricultural sector.

Marcel Zijp, Senior Investment Manager at Brightlands Venture Partners, highlighted the significance of Gravity Gardens’ platform in promoting natural plant development and reducing chemical use. The company plans to use the recent funding to further develop industrial-scale equipment and conduct larger trial programs across various crops, with a focus on market readiness by 2027.

In collaboration with Demcon, a Dutch engineering group, Gravity Gardens is advancing towards the development of industrial-scale equipment while continuing trial programs. The company’s commitment to sustainable and innovative seed technology positions it as a key player in the future of agriculture, offering a promising solution for crop establishment and growth.
