Lotus Unveils V8 Esprit: Bridging the Gap Between Emira and Evija
Lotus to Reintroduce Esprit Name for New Flagship Sports Car
Lotus is gearing up to revive the iconic Esprit name for a brand new flagship sports car, positioned strategically between the Emira and the all-electric Evija in the lineup. Codenamed Type 135, this upcoming model is set to offer a unique blend of performance and luxury.
According to Ben Payne, Group Lotus vice president of design, “The Type 135 will fill the gap between the Emira and the Evija, catering to discerning buyers seeking a high-performance driving experience.”
One of the most exciting aspects of the Type 135 is the availability of multiple powertrain options. In addition to the confirmed hybrid V8, Lotus is also planning a lighter V6 version, offering enhanced accessibility without compromising on performance.
The V8 hybrid variant is projected to deliver over 1,000 horsepower, while Lotus aims for a weight of approximately 1,500 kg. The inclusion of an 800V electrical architecture and an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission further highlights the cutting-edge technology integrated into this new model.

Comparing the Esprit to the existing Emira 420 Sport and the Evija, it’s evident that the Type 135 will occupy a distinct position in Lotus’ lineup. While the Emira offers 416 hp from its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the Evija impresses with a remarkable 2,011 hp generated by its four electric motors.
Lotus emphasizes that the new Esprit is being meticulously developed to maintain the exceptional handling characteristics that define the Emira, while harnessing hybrid technology to approach the performance standards set by the Evija.
“Our goal is to preserve the emotional connection that Emira owners have with the legendary Lotus handling, while integrating V-8 hybrid technology to push closer to the technical excellence exemplified by the Evija,” states a Lotus representative.
Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development from Lotus.
