Samsung made a groundbreaking move in 2019 by being the first mainstream manufacturer to release a foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold. Despite some initial setbacks with durability, software, and display issues, Samsung successfully addressed these problems in subsequent models and has since become a dominant player in the foldable smartphone market.

Recently, Samsung announced plans to launch the Galaxy Trifold 2, priced at $2,900, in mid-2027 as a response to the competition from Apple’s iPhone Duo. This decision was driven by the increasing interest in foldable phones following Apple’s entry into the market.

The unveiling of the iPhone Duo has sparked excitement among Apple fans, leading to a surge in interest in foldable devices overall. In fact, sales of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 increased by 10% following the announcement of the iPhone Duo.

One of the key factors contributing to Samsung’s success in the wake of Apple’s foldable phone launch is availability and pricing. While the iPhone Duo is set to hit the market a month later, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is already available for purchase, both online and in retail stores. Additionally, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is priced lower than the iPhone Duo, making it a more affordable option for consumers.

In the US, the iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, which is $800 more than the iPhone 18 Pro. On the other hand, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is priced slightly lower than the Duo. In South Korea, the price difference between the two devices is even more significant, with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 being substantially cheaper than the Duo.

While Apple may not be too concerned about the competition from Samsung, the increased interest in foldable phones could potentially lead to more customers for both companies. It will be interesting to see how the rivalry between the two tech giants unfolds in the ever-evolving smartphone market.
