Microsoft has officially introduced its highly anticipated Copilot app, which integrates AI chat, coding capabilities, and long-running agents into a unified application designed for both personal and business use.

The latest iteration of the Copilot app features three main sections: Home, which merges chat functionality with Microsoft’s Cowork agent; Code, enabling users to create their own apps and tools by describing them; and Autopilot, allowing users to set up their own always-on AI agents.

Furthermore, the app now includes full versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, enabling users to create and edit documents seamlessly with the assistance of AI and collaboration with colleagues without the need to switch between different applications.

Microsoft’s announcement of the Copilot app serves as a response to competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic, who have been offering similar functionalities in their apps targeted at businesses, a market segment traditionally dominated by Microsoft.

Point of Differentiation: During a recent event, Microsoft executives highlighted the company’s approach to Copilot compared to competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic. The emphasis was on corporate IT departments, leveraging Microsoft’s established reputation for security and compliance.

Jacob Andreou, the executive vice president leading Copilot, emphasized the importance of not sending sensitive files to local machines, a practice that sets Microsoft apart from some competitors.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella positioned Copilot as a strategic move to avoid reliance on a single AI lab, advocating for the ability to test models against internal benchmarks and seamlessly switch between different AI models.

Flexible Model Selection: Microsoft highlighted the flexibility of choosing between AI models from various providers, including OpenAI and Anthropic. Users can select specific models or opt for an Auto mode that automatically chooses the most suitable model for each request.

Evolution of Autopilot: Autopilot, a key feature of the Copilot app, emerged from Microsoft’s earlier experiments with OpenClaw, an open-source personal AI agent. The new Copilot allows users to create and customize their own Autopilots tailored to specific tasks and preferences.

Each Autopilot operates within a company’s Microsoft 365 environment in the cloud, possessing its own identity, memory, and email address. Users can interact with their Autopilots in collaboration tools like Teams and Outlook, treating them as integral members of their teams.
