AirPods Enhancements: The Long-Awaited Update

Apple recently released a software update for AirPods alongside the iOS 27 update. One of the key features in this update is the addition of custom EQ, a highly requested feature for AirPods users.

The latest firmware build numbers for AirPods are 9A350 for AirPods 5 and 9A348 for other models. This update is applicable to various AirPods models, with automatic installation happening while the AirPods are charging and within Bluetooth range of an iPhone, iPad, or Mac connected to WiFi.

Custom EQ comes to AirPods

With the new firmware update, users can now access custom EQ controls in the Settings app for their AirPods. This feature allows for adjustments to the lows, mids, and highs of the audio output, providing a personalized sound experience.

Apple emphasizes that AirPods are designed to faithfully represent audio, but the custom EQ feature offers users the flexibility to tailor the sound to their preferences. Real-time adjustments can be made while playing a song from Apple Music within the Settings app.

Although the custom EQ feature is a basic three-band system, it fulfills a long-standing user request and enhances the overall AirPods experience. The feature is available for AirPods with an H2 chip, including AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4, and AirPods Max 2.

Other iOS 27 features for AirPods

Aside from the custom EQ feature, iOS 27 introduces several other enhancements for AirPods:

• Settings app redesign: The AirPods interface within the Settings app has been revamped, with reorganized controls for Hearing Health, Find My, Live Translation, and more.
• Adaptive Audio slider: A new slider in the Settings app allows users to fine-tune Adaptive Audio mode.
• GymKit: The full GymKit experience is now available on iPhone and AirPods Pro 3.
• Precision Finding: Precision Finding in the Find My app can be used to locate AirPods Pro 3.
• Siri AI: AirPods can now interact with Siri AI when paired with a compatible iPhone.
