Apple Delights Users with Unexpected watchOS 27.0.1 Update for All Compatible Models

Apple recently rolled out watchOS 27.0.1 for the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, aiming to fix a bug causing sudden reboots on these latest wearables. Initially, this update was exclusive to the 2026 models, leaving other users on watchOS 27.0.

However, Apple has now extended the update to include the Apple Watch Series 9, Ultra 2, and newer models, encompassing all watches compatible with watchOS 27. Unfortunately, the company drew a firm line by discontinuing software updates for the 2022 Apple Watch Series 8 and the original Apple Watch Ultra, much sooner than anticipated.

Consequently, the Series 6, Series 7, and Series 8 are stuck on watchOS 26.6, released on July 27, 2026. While there may be future updates for security issues, these models have essentially reached the end of their update cycle.

On the bright side, the Series 9, Ultra 2, and newer models continue to receive support, with watchOS 27.0.1 addressing additional unspecified bugs. The release notes, similar to the previous update, highlight bug fixes, notably resolving unexpected restarts.

Furthermore, the expanded watchOS 27.0.1 aligns with iOS 27.0.1, which addressed issues on the iPhone 18 Pro models. Despite the lack of detailed release notes for sub-point updates, Apple likely included minor fixes and enhancements in this release.

It’s worth noting that the urgency of addressing the random rebooting issue on the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 may have expedited the watchOS 27.0.1 update. Reports indicated that these models were restarting during various activities, prompting a swift resolution from Apple.

The cause of these reboots was attributed to a Neural Engine timeout triggering a device reboot to recover. While the watchOS 27.2 betas didn’t exhibit the same issue, the fix implemented in watchOS 27.0.1 likely carried over to subsequent updates.
