PUBG: Black Budget Cancelled After Closed Alpha Testing
The highly anticipated extraction shooter spin-off of Krafton’s popular battle royale game, PUBG, known as Black Budget, has been abruptly cancelled after less than a year of closed alpha testing. Krafton made the decision to end development due to concerns about the game’s long-term player experience.
According to Krafton, the current direction of Black Budget was not aligning with their vision of delivering an enjoyable gaming experience for players over an extended period. Despite the cancellation, PUBG Studios has stated that valuable lessons learned during the development process will be applied to future projects.
In a development update post on Steam, the publishers expressed their gratitude to the participants of the closed alpha tests for their feedback and support. They emphasized the importance of listening to players and incorporating their insights into upcoming gameplay experiences.
Black Budget was initially unveiled in November of the previous year, with no official release date announced before Krafton decided to halt its development. The game was described as a tactical extraction shooter where players take on the role of mercenaries tasked with retrieving top-secret technology from an abandoned research facility on a mysterious island caught in a time loop.
Unfortunately, Black Budget is not the only PUBG spin-off that met an early demise. Earlier in the year, another spin-off titled PUBG: Blindspot was also discontinued shortly after entering early access. The reasons cited for both cancellations were similar, with developers expressing challenges in delivering the intended gaming experience sustainably.
Despite the relative obscurity of these spin-offs compared to the original PUBG title, the decision to terminate Black Budget with a brief Steam announcement has raised questions about the future of PUBG’s expansion efforts. While developers may have valid reasons for discontinuing projects, early cancellations could hinder the potential growth of new gaming experiences in the live service shooter genre.
