Universal Quantum Raises €89 Million to Expand Modular Quantum Computing Platform in the UK
Universal Quantum, a Brighton-based company specializing in building large-scale quantum computing systems for practical use, has recently announced a significant milestone. The company has successfully secured over €89 million ($100 million) in Series A funding, marking it as the largest Series A funding round ever raised by a quantum firm in the UK.
This substantial funding will play a crucial role in accelerating Universal Quantum’s global expansion efforts, as well as in further developing and commercializing its modular quantum technology. The ultimate goal is to advance towards fault-tolerant quantum computing, a critical step in pushing the boundaries of quantum computing technology.
The Series A funding round was co-led by DCVC and Firgun Ventures, with additional participation from EDBI, Artal, Integral GlobalTech, Main Sequence, Hostplus, NGS Super, IAG Capital, EdenBase, Eigenstate.holdings, and Dave Baszucki, the founder and CEO of Roblox. Other strategic investors, both existing and new, such as Nauta Capital and The Venture Collective, also contributed to the round.
Dr. Sebastian Weidt, CEO and co-founder of Universal Quantum, expressed his gratitude for the support, stating, “Universal Quantum’s progress reflects our partners’ belief that we represent one of the most credible paths to quantum computing at scale. This round unites an extraordinary group of investors from the world’s most important pools of capital around a single mission: delivering utility-scale quantum computing.”
The Series A funding comes at a time of continued investment in European quantum computing hardware. In 2026 alone, seven comparable companies in Europe have secured approximately €714 million in funding. This brings the combined total investment in European quantum computing companies to over €803 million, including Universal Quantum’s recent funding round.
Other notable European companies in the quantum computing space include Oxford Quantum Circuits, Delft-based QuantWare, and France’s Quobly, all of which have secured substantial funding for their respective quantum computing projects.
Firgun Ventures, one of the co-lead investors in Universal Quantum’s funding round, has also been involved in financing other notable quantum computing companies, such as Oxford Quantum Circuits and ZuriQ.
Universal Quantum’s journey began in 2018 when it was founded by Professor Sebastian Weidt and Professor Winfried Hensinger of the University of Sussex. The company has since evolved from an academic vision into a global engineering operation with sites across three continents and more than 100 highly technical full-time employees.
The company’s mission is to build utility-scale quantum computers that can address global challenges in various industries, including drug discovery, battery design, climate modeling, and more. Universal Quantum’s modular trapped-ion architecture and enabling technologies are designed to make this vision a reality.
The new capital infusion will fuel the ongoing development and commercialization of Universal Quantum’s modular approach to building practical, error-corrected quantum computers. The company aims to leverage its patented interconnect technology and advanced integrated chips to accelerate the path to larger-scale quantum computers.
Additionally, Universal Quantum plans to expand its presence in Singapore, where it is establishing its first R&D center outside Europe, as well as in the United States, Japan, and its German hub in Hamburg.
The potential economic impact of quantum technology is substantial, with the market projected to be worth €53-89 billion annually by 2035. This technology has the potential to unlock up to €2.4 trillion of economic value worldwide in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, finance, and automotive.
As Universal Quantum continues to deliver on its commitments, including a €68 million contract with the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the company is poised to make a significant impact in the field of quantum computing on a global scale. With a focus on scalability and practicality, Universal Quantum is well-positioned to lead the way in the development of utility-scale quantum computing solutions.
