Amazon has announced a significant shift in its tablet strategy by introducing a new line of premium Alexa Tablets. Moving away from its traditional focus on budget-friendly devices, these new tablets are designed to compete directly with Apple’s iPad, now running on Android and providing full access to the Google Play Store.

This move marks the most significant change in Amazon’s tablet lineup since Panos Panay, known for his work on Microsoft’s Surface hardware, took over Amazon’s devices business in 2023.

The flagship model, the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, boasts a 12-inch display and comes with a magnetic snap-on keyboard and a stylus, resembling the setup familiar to Surface Pro users.

The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro is priced starting at $499.99, with an optional Nanomatte anti-glare display for $549.99. Additional accessories like the Pro Keyboard for $149.99 and Pro Pen for $89.99 can bring the total cost to nearly $790 for a fully equipped model.

In addition to the 12 Pro, Amazon also introduced the Alexa Tablet 11 starting at $329.99 and the Alexa Tablet 8 starting at $229.99. All three models are set to launch on October 14 in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

Alexa Integration and Features: All three models come equipped with Amazon’s AI assistant, Alexa+, offering features like On-Screen Intelligence that enables Alexa to read and act on screen content, as well as live sessions for continuous conversations.

To address privacy concerns, Amazon assures users that screen-reading features are opt-in and provide visual indicators when Alexa accesses the screen. The tablets also offer a dedicated reading mode through the Kindle app, enhancing the reading experience and extending battery life.

Transition from Fire Tablets: The new Alexa Tablets mark a departure from Amazon’s Fire tablet line, signaling a strategic shift towards higher-end devices. Despite the change, Amazon ensures continued support for Fire tablets and access to existing apps and content.

With these new tablets, Amazon aims to generate revenue through device usage rather than just sales, aligning with the company’s long-standing strategy of leveraging content sales on its platform.

The Alexa Tablets, while offering Google Play Store access, prioritize Amazon services like Prime Video, Kindle, Audible, and Amazon Music, delivering a personalized user experience.

By entering the higher-end tablet market, Amazon directly competes with Apple’s iPad and Samsung’s Android tablets, positioning its 12 Pro model against Microsoft’s Surface Pro as well.

Technical Specs: The tablets feature MediaTek processors, with the 12 Pro boasting impressive speed and graphics capabilities. Amazon collaborated with Corning to introduce Nanomatte glass for enhanced display quality.

In addition to the Alexa Tablets, Amazon also announced the release of Amazon Kids Tablets in various sizes, bundled with kid-friendly features and a subscription service for children’s content.

The new tablets will be available for purchase starting October 19 in select European countries and through major retailers like Best Buy and Target.
