Embracing the Widescreen Phone Revival: Why Oppo Could Lead the Way

Oppo Find X9 Ultra 6

Is a revolution on the horizon for non-foldable phones? According to reputable leaker Digital Chat Station (as reported by Ice Universe on X), Oppo is in the works of developing a new flagship phone with a traditional 16:9 aspect ratio.

While not the first of its kind – Huawei’s Pura X View has already made its debut in China – this move by Oppo could potentially initiate a new trend in globally available smartphones. The concept of a 16:9 aspect ratio may not be groundbreaking, but it does offer several practical advantages.

Returning to the Past

In the earlier days of smartphones, a 16:9 display was the standard. As phones evolved from mere communication devices to pocket-sized entertainment hubs, the shift to this aspect ratio became essential.

However, over the past decade, taller and narrower screens have become prevalent, allowing for a larger overall screen area without the bulky bezels that characterized many phones from the mid-2010s.

But what if there was a way to combine the best of both worlds? The report from Digital Chat Station suggests that Oppo’s new phone would feature ultra-thin 1mm bezels on all four sides, creating a symmetrical appearance. This design approach offers several distinct advantages.

Eliminating Letterboxing

For years, the experience of watching widescreen content on smartphones has been less than ideal. While larger screens made it feasible, the presence of significant black bars above and below the content (referred to as ‘letterboxing’) has been a source of frustration for many.
