The Social Reckoning is flopping at the box office

The Social Reckoning Faces Box Office Flop

Despite its important messages, The Social Reckoning has fallen short at the box office. According to Variety, Aaron Sorkin’s latest film only brought in $5.5 million over the weekend, well below its $30–42 million budget. This disappointing performance is in stark contrast to the success of The Social Network, which opened with $22 million.

The lackluster reviews for The Social Reckoning may have contributed to its underwhelming box office numbers. With a 55% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and negative feedback on social media, audiences may have been left wanting a true sequel to The Social Network, which was highly acclaimed and won three Oscars. Criticisms have also been directed towards the performances of Mikey Madison as whistleblower Frances Haugen and Jeremy Allen White as Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz. Madison mentioned to The Hollywood Reporter that she felt Sorkin’s direction hindered her ability to authentically portray her character. Additionally, the absence of Jesse Eisenberg, who played Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network, may have impacted audience interest, as he reportedly declined to be part of the new film.

Interestingly, Other Mommy from Blumhouse Studios had a successful weekend, earning $27.5 million. This suggests that audiences may be more drawn to horror films rather than narratives about the negative effects of social media on society.
