Amazon is currently in discussions to acquire Decart, a startup specializing in software that enhances AI model performance on various chips, potentially valuing the company at $7 billion. Although neither Amazon nor Decart have officially confirmed the talks, this potential deal could significantly impact Amazon’s AI chip business strategy.

If the acquisition goes through, it would mark one of Amazon’s largest deals, surpassing its previous acquisitions of Whole Foods and MGM. Decart, known for its profitability and customer base that includes eBay, offers software solutions to optimize AI model performance on chips from Nvidia, Google, and Amazon.

Decart’s technology could potentially facilitate a smoother transition for developers accustomed to Nvidia’s dominant position in the AI chip market, thus making Amazon’s custom chips more appealing. The startup’s proprietary software also aligns with Amazon’s goal of maximizing the efficiency of its existing chip infrastructure.

Moreover, Decart’s AI models, such as Lucy and Oasis, showcase the company’s innovation in real-time video editing and virtual world creation. Founded by the Leitersdorf brothers and Moshe Shalev, Decart has established itself as a key player in the AI software industry, with operations in San Francisco and Tel Aviv.

The potential acquisition of Decart by Amazon could not only enhance the performance of Trainium, Amazon’s AI chip, but also open new avenues for integration across Amazon’s various businesses. With existing ties to AWS and a track record of successful collaborations, Decart’s software solutions could further elevate Amazon’s technological capabilities.

While Amazon is not the first company to express interest in Decart, the startup’s unique software offerings have attracted attention from industry giants like Nvidia and Anthropic. With a focus on streamlining AI model deployment and optimizing chip performance, Decart remains a sought-after asset in the competitive AI landscape.

As Amazon explores strategic acquisitions to bolster its AI capabilities and reduce reliance on external providers like Nvidia, the potential acquisition of Decart signifies a significant step towards achieving technological independence and innovation in the AI chip market.
