The Future of Fusion Power and the Growing Demand for Lithium

If fusion power becomes a reality, as many experts believe it will, the global demand for lithium is set to skyrocket. This demand is the driving force behind Licube, a startup that has acquired technology from Hirosaki University in Japan to refine lithium-6, the specific form of lithium required for fusion plant fuel, from naturally occurring lithium sources.

The critical factor in the fusion power equation is the availability of fuel. While deuterium, one of the necessary fuels, is abundant, tritium, the other essential fuel, is incredibly scarce in nature. To address this challenge, fusion power plants are designed to produce tritium on-site by using lithium as a breeding material. When lithium-6, the superior neutron-capturing form of lithium, interacts with neutrons released during a fusion reaction, it transforms into helium and tritium. This tritium can then be harvested, purified, and reintroduced into the reactor for fuel.

However, the natural abundance of lithium-6 is limited, comprising only a small percentage of total lithium reservoirs. The process of separating lithium-6 from lithium-7, the heavier form, is complex and currently lacks sufficient capacity on a global scale. Licube recognizes this challenge as a lucrative opportunity, estimating a potential $50 billion market by 2040 if fusion power becomes mainstream.

While fusion energy holds promise for a significant share of the energy market worth trillions of dollars, fusion startups are still several years away from establishing operational power plants. Licube acknowledges this timeline and plans to leverage its technology to refine lithium for various industries including semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, fission reactors, and spacecraft applications until fusion power gains traction.

The Technology Behind Lithium Purification

At the core of Licube’s operations is an electrolyzer, a device that utilizes electrical currents to facilitate chemical reactions. In Licube’s process, lithium is dissolved in a liquid on one side of a ceramic membrane. As current flows through the membrane, lithium-6 migrates faster, allowing Licube to extract and isolate this enriched form of lithium for fusion companies to utilize in their fuel breeding systems.

The ultimate objective is to achieve a purity level of at least 99.995% lithium-6, ensuring optimal performance in fusion reactors.

From Retirement to Fusion Energy Entrepreneurship

Yohei Kiguchi, co-founder and CEO of Licube, was inspired to embark on this venture after a visit to ITER, the experimental fusion reactor under construction in France. Following his retirement from Enechange, a Japanese energy-switching platform, Kiguchi felt compelled to pursue a new energy-related endeavor.

Reflecting on his decision, Kiguchi shared, “I found out that I was too young to retire. I’m an energy guy, and I want to contribute to something bigger.”

As Licube continues to innovate in the field of lithium purification, the potential for fusion power to revolutionize the energy sector remains a tantalizing prospect. While the road to commercial fusion reactors may be long, the groundwork laid by startups like Licube is paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
