In a strategic move to compete with Amazon’s smart home business, Apple has introduced HomeView, a $299 smart display that directly rivals Amazon’s Echo Show. This unveiling also includes a range of cameras, a video doorbell, and a smart lock by LG Electronics, marking Apple’s entry into Amazon-owned Ring’s core categories.

Furthermore, Apple announced the launch of a new Apple TV 4K and the HomePod mini 2, challenging Amazon’s Fire TV and Echo speakers in the market.

Last week, Amazon made a bold move into Apple’s territory by revealing premium Alexa Tablets, including a Pro model that competes more closely with the iPad.

The newly introduced Apple HomeView boasts a 7-inch screen and is available in tabletop and wall-mounted versions. It has the capability to recognize up to six household members by their faces and seamlessly switch to each person’s messages, calendar, and apps.

Powered by Siri AI, Apple’s advanced voice assistant, the HomeView promises to be more capable and conversational. Pre-orders for the device started on Tuesday, with shipping scheduled for November 13.

Market Share Insights: Recent data from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners reveals that about two-thirds of U.S. smart speaker owners own an Amazon device, while Google and Apple account for approximately 25% and 7%, respectively. Apple’s market share has remained in the mid-single digits for an extended period.

According to CIRP analysts Michael Levin and Josh Lowitz, Apple may target individuals without smart speakers rather than attempting to convert Amazon and Google customers. The firm’s research indicates that only 57% of recent Apple buyers own a smart speaker of any kind.

The HomeView is specifically designed for users already immersed in the Apple ecosystem, as setup and personalized features necessitate an iPhone or iPad. Notably, it will not be available for sale in the European Union due to the unavailability of Siri AI in that region.

Apple has hinted at potential future charges for certain Apple Intelligence features that rely on server-side models. On the other hand, Amazon’s Alexa+ service is currently offered for free with Prime membership or at a standalone fee of $19.99 per month.

Competition Expansion: Alongside the HomeView, Apple’s collaboration with LG and Schneider Electric has resulted in the introduction of the Apple Home Collection. This collection includes a range of products such as a $249.95 LG video doorbell, indoor and outdoor cameras priced from $199.95 to $399.95, and a $349.95 LG deadbolt equipped with ultra-wideband technology for automatic unlocking as the owner approaches.

The accessories are slated for release starting in December, with some products expected to hit the market in early 2027.

To access camera video history, users will require an iCloud+ storage plan, with no separate camera subscription necessary. Additionally, Apple has partnered with ADT to offer installation services at its retail stores for an extra fee.

The unveiling of the LG smart lock comes on the heels of Ring’s announcement of its first smart lock, priced at $249, sans a keyhole and featuring a hand-turned dial for battery revival. The LG lock includes a backup key slot, providing users with added convenience and security.
