Google finally releases Gemini 4 Argon

Google Launches Gemini 4 Argon Model in the Frontier AI Race

Google has officially entered the competitive frontier AI race with the launch of its highly anticipated Gemini 4 Argon model. This new model is positioned to rival some of the industry’s best offerings after months of anticipation.

Described by Google as delivering “frontier reasoning and improved performance across complex workflows,” Argon aims to reduce hedging, repetition, and cliches commonly found in AI chatbots. Google asserts that Argon surpasses competitors like GPT-6 Astra, Claude Fable 5.1, and Claude Opus 5.5 in various benchmarks spanning coding, cybersecurity, science, finance, and law.

Internally, Google is already leveraging Argon for tasks such as identifying and fixing cybersecurity vulnerabilities, optimizing computing resources for YouTube’s comments section, and enhancing the drone physics simulator for Alphabet’s drone delivery service, Wing.

The rollout of Argon begins today for Google’s higher-tier Pro and Ultra subscribers through the Gemini app and AI mode in Search, as well as for Ultra subscribers on the Antigravity agentic development platform. The availability of Argon for Plus subscribers or free users remains unclear.

Google has priced Argon competitively, launching with an introductory rate of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. This pricing is approximately one-fifth the cost of competing models like OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra and Anthropic’s Fable 5. Following the introductory period, prices will double at the end of November, remaining cost-effective compared to frontier rivals on a per-token basis.

The release of Argon follows a limited testing phase with a select group of “trusted cyber defenders” to assess potential risks, aligning with recent practices for frontier model launches.

Argon marks Google’s first major frontier release since Gemini 3 in late 2025, bridging the gap left by advancements from Anthropic and OpenAI. Despite internal challenges, Argon’s arrival signifies Google’s commitment to remaining competitive in the AI landscape.

With the unveiling of Argon coinciding with Meta’s announcement of its own frontier model, Muse Wonder Full, the AI race continues to evolve rapidly. Google’s latest offering serves as a testament to the dynamic nature of the frontier AI sector, highlighting the constant shifts in power and innovation.
