Android is using AI to suss out scammers in Google Messages

New Scam Defense Features Coming to Android

Android is set to introduce innovative scam defense features aimed at enhancing mobile fraud protection for users. These new features will provide added security in Google Messages and offer additional tools to safeguard against potential scams.

Enhanced Protection Against Scams

Google will be rolling out a new “enhanced protection” setting in the coming weeks, building on the existing Scam Detection feature in Google Messages. This new setting will utilize cloud-based Gemini AI models to quickly assess the intentions of potential scammers in conversations with unknown senders.

According to Google, scammers often hide their true motives through prolonged conversations. The secure cloud analysis will enhance the on-device detection capabilities, enabling the identification and prevention of sophisticated attacks.

Enhanced Data Security

During the AI analysis, user data will be encrypted and processed in a secure dedicated space inaccessible to Google or any other party. The enhanced protection mode will be opt-in and will leverage on-device Gemini Nano AI to analyze web signals in URLs to determine if they pose any security risks.

Additional Security Features

Other security enhancements include blocking apps from enabling call forwarding and notifying users of such attempts. Additionally, sensitive information will be automatically concealed during screen-sharing in Chrome and Android WebView. The scam detection feature for chat notifications, initially available on Pixel phones, will now expand to devices from various brands.
