Apple Retail Staff Issue Warning on iPhone Duo Walk-In Policy

iPhone Duo in store disappointment

Apple is advising customers to steer clear of their retail stores on the release day of the highly anticipated iPhone Duo on October 23. The company has informed its retail staff not to expect any stock of the iPhone Duo for walk-in purchases on launch day. Customers without a preorder are being discouraged from visiting Apple Stores in hopes of purchasing the device, as it is likely to result in disappointment.

Although Apple’s online store suggests checking for pickup availability at stores on October 24, the option for pickup reservations quickly disappeared after limited stock was depleted. The lack of guarantee for in-store stock on launch day is evident, with Apple instructing employees to deter customers from attempting to purchase the device in-store to avoid dealing with disappointed customers.

Reports of constrained availability of the iPhone Duo surfaced months before the official announcement, with Apple struggling to meet production yield goals. Production of the Duo was reportedly slow, with only a few hundred units produced per day in late August. Despite production challenges, Apple decided to proceed with the October 23 launch date, a move that industry experts like Mark Gurman believe was a mistake.

Gurman criticized Apple’s decision to prioritize early market entry over meeting demand, leading to potential disappointment for eager customers. The iPhone Duo, priced at $1,999 in the United States, is set to begin preorder deliveries on October 23. While walk-in purchases may be discouraged, there is a possibility of limited availability in stores. However, stock is expected to increase in the following days and weeks as Apple stores receive regular shipments.

Apple’s typical practice of underpromising and overdelivering on delivery dates may not apply to the iPhone Duo, so customers are advised not to rely on early delivery. Despite the challenges, Apple’s decision to expand preorders to 70 countries simultaneously indicates confidence in their inventory. Customers interested in purchasing the iPhone Duo in-store should act quickly, as availability is expected to be limited.
