2027 BMW iX5: A Fast and Furious Ride – Quick Drive Review
The Australian market is witnessing a surge in the sales of urban and family SUVs, with a particular interest in all-electric vehicles. One such vehicle making its debut is the BMW X5, set to be released as the iX5 in the upcoming fifth-generation X5 lineup launch in Australia later this year.
To cater to a wider audience, BMW is offering a variety of powertrain options for the new X5, including mild-hybrid petrol and diesel engines, as well as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model. The only variant not available in Australia for now is the hydrogen-fueled model.
In addition to its powertrain options, the new X5 is equipped with BMW’s latest technologies, a new design language, and a cabin filled with high-tech screens. To provide an in-depth review of the new model, we attended the international media launch in California, where we had the opportunity to test drive both the iX5 and the petrol-powered X5 40 xDrive.
The pricing for the petrol X5 40 xDrive and the diesel X5 40d xDrive will be higher than their predecessors, starting at $143,900 and $145,900 respectively. These models will be available in sportier M Sport specification, featuring M alloy wheels, M brakes, M adaptive damping, and other exterior enhancements. The interior comes standard with a panoramic glass roof, power-adjustable seats, and ‘Veganza’ synthetic leather upholstery.
The all-electric iX5 and the X5 50e xDrive PHEV will be available in early 2027, with pricing yet to be confirmed. The iX5 boasts a spacious cabin with large storage areas, high-quality materials, and advanced technology features. The boot offers ample cargo space and a frunk for additional storage.
In terms of performance, the iX5 60 xDrive model features two electric motors, delivering up to 425kW of power and 805Nm of torque. The petrol-powered X5 40 xDrive is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre petrol straight-six engine, while the diesel X5 40d xDrive features a mild-hybrid straight-six engine. The plug-in hybrid X5 50e boasts 360kW and 700Nm of torque.
The driving experience of the iX5 is described as surefooted, fast, and capable, with excellent performance and a competent chassis. The petrol-powered X5 offers a balance of power and comfort, while the iX5 excels in efficiency and range, with a quick-charging capability.
Safety features in the new X5 include adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane-centring assist, surround-view camera, and tyre pressure monitoring. The X5 comes with a five-year unlimited-kilometre warranty, with the EV battery covered for up to eight years or 160,000km.
Overall, the BMW iX5 combines luxury, performance, and sustainability in a versatile SUV package. With a range of powertrain options, advanced technologies, and premium features, the iX5 sets a new standard for electric SUVs in the Australian market.
