Amazon Abandons Plans for LOTR MMO
Amazon Games Layoffs Signal Major Changes in Game Development
A recent wave of layoffs at Amazon Games has left many talented developers jobless, including those working on highly anticipated projects like New World and the Lord of the Rings game. The news came from a former senior gameplay engineer for Amazon Games, who shared the unfortunate update on LinkedIn. Despite efforts to view the post, it appears to have been taken down.
Industry Response and Future Plans
In the aftermath of the layoffs, both Amazon and Embracer have remained silent on the matter. Surprisingly, the Lord of the Rings game is still listed on the Amazon Games website, hinting at possible ongoing development efforts.
Impacts on Existing Projects
Following the layoffs, the team behind New World: Aeternum announced a halt in new content updates for the game. However, the servers will remain active until 2026. Meanwhile, Amazon reassured players that it will continue to support its other MMOs, Throne and Liberty and Lost Ark, according to a company spokesperson.
Looking Ahead: Amazon’s MMO Ventures
The planned collaboration between Amazon and Embracer for the Lord of the Rings game, first announced in 2023, marks Amazon’s second attempt at an MMO set in the iconic fantasy universe. This endeavor follows the cancellation of a previous LOTR MMO project unveiled in 2019.
