Amazon Clashes with Perplexity Over AI Shopping Experience

Amazon has found itself in a dispute with Perplexity, an AI startup, over the use of Perplexity’s Comet AI browser to make purchases on Amazon’s platform. The ecommerce giant has expressed its disapproval of this practice, leading to a heated exchange between the two companies.

Perplexity’s Comet AI browser features an agentic AI capability that enables it to locate and buy products from a variety of websites, including Amazon, on behalf of users. However, Amazon has issued a stern legal warning to Perplexity, demanding that they cease allowing their AI assistant to conduct shopping activities for customers, citing a misalignment with Amazon’s principles.

In response, Perplexity has criticized Amazon’s stance, suggesting that the ecommerce giant prioritizes advertising and influencing purchasing decisions over streamlining the shopping process for consumers. They reference a recent statement by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy about potential partnerships with third-party agents in the future.

Perplexity’s spokesperson, Jesse Dwyer, likened Amazon’s restrictions to visiting a store that only allows customers to use in-house personal shoppers, equating it to a sales tactic rather than a genuine shopping convenience.

On the other hand, Amazon maintains that third-party applications facilitating purchases on its platform should respect the choices of service providers, highlighting concerns about Comet’s impact on the overall shopping experience. They argue that Comet’s involvement leads to a compromised level of service for customers.
