Super recognizers' unique eye patterns give AI an edge in face matching tasks

Discover what sets super recognizers apart from the rest when it comes to remembering faces in a recent study conducted by cognitive scientists at UNSW Sydney.

It’s not just about the quantity of information they absorb about a face but rather the quality of the information their eyes focus on that makes super recognizers exceptional at this skill.

Dr. James Dunn, the lead author of the research published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, explains, “Super-recognizers have a unique ability to select the most relevant parts of a face to observe, making them more efficient at distinguishing one individual from another.”

Insights from Eye-Tracking Technology

The researchers employed eye-tracking technology to study the eye movements of 37 super recognizers and 68 individuals with average facial recognition abilities as they viewed face photos on a screen.

By analyzing where and for how long each group looked at the faces, the researchers fed this data into nine neural networks trained for face recognition to compare their performance with that of humans.

Dr. Dunn notes, “AI has advanced significantly in face recognition capabilities, allowing us to determine which eye patterns are most informative for this task.”

The results showed that AI fed with data from super recognizers outperformed AI fed with data from average recognizers in matching faces, emphasizing the value of the specific visual information super recognizers focus on.

Unique Visual Expertise

While super recognizers’ skills seem innate and not easily replicable, Dr. Dunn clarifies that their ability to recognize faces is not solely about observation but also about the brain’s processing of this information.

He compares their approach to recognizing faces to creating caricatures, where exaggerating distinct features enhances recognition. Super recognizers excel at identifying the most distinguishing facial traits that contribute to recognition.

Humans vs. Machines in Facial Recognition

In scenarios like airport eGates, AI’s simultaneous analysis of every pixel in a face surpasses human capabilities due to stable conditions and standardized images. However, in real-world settings with varying conditions, human contextual understanding still provides an edge in facial recognition.

Dr. Dunn concludes, “The study sheds light on human visual expertise and its potential impact on facial recognition technology development, showcasing the importance of how we observe faces in shaping our understanding of them.”
