HBO Max UK Launch Date, Shows, Pricing, and Plans: Everything You Need to Know
For many years, UK audiences have enjoyed most HBO content from the US through Sky and Now’s Entertainment Membership, with exceptions like the popular comedy Hacks. However, recent speculation has arisen regarding the global expansion of HBO Max, the streaming service.
The anticipation of HBO Max’s arrival in the UK was high, but uncertainties arose due to licensing issues with Sky. A significant deal has shed light on the situation, revealing the launch date and details on how to subscribe. Here’s what we know about HBO Max’s arrival in the UK and the subscription process.
When will HBO Max launch in the UK?
Warner has officially announced that HBO Max UK will be launched in early 2026. The exact month is yet to be disclosed.
Speculation suggests that the launch might occur in January 2026, especially since Friends is leaving Netflix on December 30, 2025. As one of the most-watched shows on Netflix UK since its arrival in 2018, Friends could be a significant attraction for HBO Max. Warner might aim to capitalize on this opportunity by launching promptly to appeal to those canceling their Netflix subscriptions.
However, this is mere speculation, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
How will HBO Max launch in the UK?
Sky has confirmed that the cheapest ad-supported tier of HBO Max will be offered to Sky TV customers at no additional cost, similar to how Paramount+ is provided. This offer will also extend to Now Entertainment Membership subscribers, priced at £9.99 per month (currently available at a discounted rate for longer contracts). Sky TV packages start from £15 per month.
For non-Sky customers, HBO Max will also be launched as a standalone streaming platform, including a Premium ad-free tier. Signing up will likely be possible through the HBO Max website or app.
How much will HBO Max cost in the UK?
Warner has not specified the UK pricing for HBO Max. However, the US pricing is as follows:
- HBO Max Basic with Ads: $10.99 per month/$109.99 per year – 1080p resolution, no offline downloads, two concurrent streams, 5.1 surround sound quality
- HBO Max Standard (Ad-Free): $18.49 per month/$184.99 per year – 1080p resolution, up to 30 offline downloads, two concurrent streams, 5.1 surround sound quality
- HBO Max Premium (Ad-Free, 4K): $22.99 per month/$229.99 per year – 4K resolution, up to 100 offline downloads, four concurrent streams, Dolby Atmos sound quality available
Considering currency conversions and market trends, the UK pricing for these tiers may vary slightly. It remains uncertain whether HBO Max will offer all three tiers mentioned in the US or focus on one ad-supported and one ad-free option at launch.
Will Sky and Now customers be able to get HBO Max ad-free?
Sky and Now customers will have access to the ad-supported tier of HBO Max for free, which is likely to be the most affordable option. Whether these customers can upgrade to a premium ad-free tier is yet to be confirmed. This strategy could potentially drive more standalone subscribers to HBO Max, but this is purely speculative at this point.
Will I still be able to watch HBO shows via Sky?
Yes, existing HBO shows will remain available via Sky until the end of 2026. This includes popular series like The White Lotus, House of the Dragon, and The Penguin. However, any new shows debuting after 2025, such as the upcoming Harry Potter TV series, are likely to be exclusive to HBO Max.
Even after the launch of HBO Max, viewers can continue watching content through this platform by creating an account via Sky, requiring basic details like email, password, and account information.
According to Cordbusters, current and upcoming shows until the end of 2025 will still be broadcast on Sky Atlantic and available on-demand.
Should I subscribe to Sky, Now, or HBO Max?
While HBO Max is set to launch in early 2026, viewers still have time to consider their options. If you’re eager to watch HBO content now and are undecided between Sky and Now, you can explore our comparison guide to make an informed decision.
