The BMW Group’s Commitment to Carbon Neutrality

The BMW Group has set ambitious goals to achieve carbon neutrality by mid-century, with a new interim target for 2035. The company aims to reduce at least 60 million metric tons of CO2e compared to 2019 levels, a significant increase from the previous target of 40 million metric tons by the end of the decade.

One notable statement in their press release is that by 2035, each euro generated will result in less than half the CO2e emissions compared to 2019. This showcases BMW’s dedication to decarbonization efforts beyond just tailpipe emissions.

“By 2035, each euro generated will see less than half as much CO2e emitted compared to 2019.”

BMW’s focus on decarbonization extends to their production processes, including the use of low-emission steel and recycled materials. For example, the new iX3 model incorporates about one-third of reused materials, ranging from recycled plastics to secondary aluminum, totaling approximately 740 kilograms.

The efficiency of the Neue Klasse iX3 surpasses that of gasoline-powered vehicles after a certain distance, becoming the greener choice when charged with renewable electricity.

BMW is actively promoting low-carbon alternative fuels like HVO100 and eFuels to reduce emissions from diesel and gasoline models by up to 90% compared to traditional fuels.

Recognizing that EV demand alone may not be sufficient to meet their targets, BMW is working to reduce CO2 emissions across the entire lifecycle of their vehicles, including the introduction of hydrogen fuel cells as a fifth drivetrain option in the iX5 60H xDrive.

Looking ahead to their 2050 net-zero commitment, BMW expects EVs to represent 50% of annual sales by 2030, encompassing brands such as BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce, and ALPINA. Despite EVs accounting for only 18.3% of total sales in the first half of 2025, BMW is dedicated to achieving their sustainability goals.
