River AI Secures $1.1 Billion in Funding for AI Startup

River AI, an AI startup founded by xAI co-founder Igor Babuschkin, has recently announced securing $1.1 billion in funding in a seed/Series A round. The funding round was led by General Catalyst and AMP PBC, with participation from notable companies such as Nvidia, AMD Ventures, Y Combinator, and Temasek.

AMP PBC, an AI-focused investment firm founded in 2026 by former Andreessen Horowitz general partner Anjney Midha, has been a significant backer of companies like Black Forest Labs, Mistral AI, LMArena, and OpenRouter.

Coming out of stealth mode in June, River AI has a unique mission to reinvent AI from the ground up. Babuschkin, with a background in AI roles at DeepMind and OpenAI, aims to transform AI models into personally trainable assistants rather than focusing on replacing human workers like other AI labs.

River’s approach involves rebuilding the entire AI stack, including training, models, the product layer, and new hardware to enable personal AI to be closer to individuals. Babuschkin envisions capable agents becoming a normal part of everyday life, acting as guardian angels that understand and assist individuals with what truly matters to them.

One of River’s initial offerings is an API that allows developers to use reinforcement learning (RL) and low-rank adaptation (LoRA) fine-tuning on models. This API aims to provide an alternative to prompt engineering by enabling developers to train open models into personalized ones that they can control and improve.

While the size of the funding round for River AI is significant for a new company, it comes at a time when enterprises are increasingly seeking control over their AI models. River’s neocloud offering promises to simplify complex reinforcement learning processes for enterprises, resulting in cost savings compared to closed-source alternatives.

The long-term vision of River AI is to enable everyone to have their own trained agents working on their behalf. With the rise of personal, locally running agents like OpenClaw and partnerships between companies like Nvidia and PC makers for AI-capable hardware, River’s technology aims to differentiate itself in the AI landscape.
