Addressing the Surge in Toyota Car Thefts: Toyota Australia Takes Action
In response to the alarming rise in Toyota car thefts by youths, gangs, and organized crime groups, a senior executive at Toyota Australia has revealed that the company is collaborating with authorities to tackle this issue head-on.
Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia’s head of sales, marketing, and franchise operations, emphasized that the automaker is actively engaged with law enforcement agencies in Victoria and Queensland to combat the escalating thefts targeting new and nearly-new Toyota vehicles.
Hanley assured customers that Toyota Australia is fully aware of the situation and is committed to addressing it. He dispelled any notion that the company was passive in its response, stating, “We are not sitting back doing nothing.”
While details of the collaboration with authorities remain confidential, Hanley underscored the company’s proactive approach and forthcoming communication with customers to provide updates on the situation.
Recent data from the Crime Statistics Agency revealed a significant surge in car thefts in Victoria, with a 116% increase over three years and a 40% spike in just one year up to June 2025. Similarly, Queensland witnessed a 101% rise in vehicle thefts over the past decade, with the Toyota LandCruiser being a prime target for thieves.
In response to the recent spike in Toyota car thefts in Queensland, the Queensland Police Service has initiated investigations into a crime wave involving nearly 50 stolen Toyota LandCruiser and RAV4 models within a three-week period. Mr. Hanley acknowledged the severity of the issue and emphasized the company’s collaboration with authorities to combat sophisticated criminal activities.
Looking ahead, Toyota Australia plans to engage with customers to provide updates on their efforts to address the thefts and enhance security measures. Hanley expressed confidence that the company’s actions, in conjunction with law enforcement, will yield positive outcomes in the fight against car theft.
