EU praises DMA: Simplified iPhone-Android Switching Shows Success
Apple and Google recently announced a collaboration to simplify the process of switching between Android and iPhone devices. This joint effort introduces new features that streamline the transfer of data between the two platforms.
A spokesperson from the European Commission praised this initiative, citing it as an example of the benefits brought by the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Although the Commission takes credit for the collaboration, the features will be accessible globally, not limited to the European Union.
According to the European Commission, the new OS portability solution facilitates seamless data transfer when setting up a new device, supporting various types of data such as contacts, calendar events, messages, photos, documents, Wi-Fi networks, passwords, and even third-party app data. This solution, which enables wireless transfer, represents a significant improvement over existing limited data transfer options.
The collaboration between Apple and Google, resulting in the eSIM transfer solution last October, has also simplified the transfer of eSIMs between iPhones and Android phones, benefiting users worldwide. The European Commission emphasizes that these developments stem from the DMA requirements for effective data portability.
The new switching features are being rolled out in an Android Canary build for Pixel devices and will soon be available in an upcoming iOS 26 developer beta. These features aim to benefit not only users but also third-party app developers by facilitating user retention during platform switches.
While the new data transfer tools are yet to be tested, they hold promise for a smoother transition between Android and iOS devices. Stay tuned for the forthcoming iOS 26 beta for a hands-on experience with these features.
