Google is powering a new US military AI platform

Department of Defense Launches GenAI.mil AI Platform

The Department of Defense has introduced its own specialized AI platform called GenAI.mil, with Google Cloud’s Gemini being the initial AI tool available on the platform, as per an official statement. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, also known as Secretary of War, has highlighted that this platform will provide cutting-edge AI models to American warriors, enhancing the effectiveness of the fighting force.

In contrast, Google has emphasized more practical applications for the platform, such as summarizing policy handbooks, generating compliance checklists, and creating risk assessments. The platform is restricted to unclassified work, and Google ensures that data from it is not utilized to train public models. Despite previous controversies, Google has collaborated with the Department of Defense on AI projects, including Project Maven.

The unexpected announcement of GenAI.mil surprised some government employees, with reports of a mysterious pop-up on work computers. Visiting the platform requires Department of Defense authorization, indicating restricted access. Pentagon Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael has hinted at the platform offering additional AI models in the future, as reported by DefenseScoop.
