Apple Music Revs Up: GM Shifts Gears in the Streaming Industry
General Motors (GM) has made it clear that it will no longer support CarPlay, but Apple fans need not worry as the automaker is introducing native support for Apple Music and Apple Car Key. This move comes as GM prepares to limit deeper integration with Apple’s infotainment system.
In an unexpected development, GM has announced that Apple Music will be seamlessly integrated into the infotainment systems of many 2025 or newer Chevy and Cadillac vehicles. Existing vehicles will receive this feature through an over-the-air software update included in GM’s free OnStar Basics package.
Cadillac models eligible for Apple Music integration include the 2025 and 2026 CT5, 2025 Escalade IQ, and 2026 Vistiq. Chevy models set to receive this feature include the 2025 and 2026 Blazer EV, Equinox EV, and Silverado EV, as well as the 2026 Corvette, Suburban, and Tahoe. GM has hinted at expanding this feature to more vehicles in the future, including the 2027 Chevy Bolt, Buick, and GMC models.
Upon receiving the software update, Apple Music will automatically appear on the dashboard, allowing users to sign in with their existing subscription and stream music via OnStar.
While GM’s adoption of Apple Music may come as a surprise, it is not unprecedented. Porsche introduced native Apple Music support to the Taycan in 2019, albeit in a different category.
In a separate announcement, GM reaffirmed its commitment to adding support for digital car keys in Apple Wallet. Although specific details such as vehicle models and timelines remain undisclosed, GM’s inclusion on Apple’s list of automakers at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) and recent evidence suggest an imminent launch. Industry insiders speculate that this feature may debut with the 2026 Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV.
These developments may serve as a peace offering to customers who have expressed discontent with GM’s shift towards its proprietary in-car systems. Surveys indicate that a significant percentage of GM owners who use CarPlay would consider switching brands if the integration is discontinued. The importance of CarPlay is underscored by the fact that a significant portion of new car buyers view its absence as a deal-breaker.
Interestingly, Apple users exhibit a stronger preference for CarPlay compared to Android users and are more likely to seek out vehicles that support this feature. This underscores the significance of CarPlay in the decision-making process for many consumers.
In conclusion, GM’s decision to introduce native support for Apple Music and Apple Car Key represents a significant shift in its approach to in-car technology.
