An Ode to the Past: The Switch 2’s Potential Return to the DS’ Greatest Feature
The Nostalgic Appeal of the Nintendo DS Compared to the Switch
The Nintendo Switch has undoubtedly been a hit, and its successor, the Switch 2, is expected to follow suit. However, for many, the Nintendo DS holds a special place in their hearts. Nostalgia plays a significant role in this sentiment, with memories of playing Mario Kart on car rides to school with friends. As I approach my thirties, it feels like the perfect time to reminisce about my childhood.
That being said, I can’t deny my love for the Switch as well. The console has seen the release of some incredible games, and the industry has taken notice, with the introduction of portable consoles like the Steam Deck and PlayStation Portal. While the Switch has left a lasting impact, one feature from the DS that is sorely missed is download play.
For those unfamiliar with download play, it allowed players to join in local co-op games even if they didn’t own the game themselves. This feature was convenient and a great way to enjoy gaming with friends who had different preferences.
Some may question the need for download play with the existence of Joy-Cons for the Switch. While Joy-Cons are suitable for some games, they are not ideal for all situations. Games like Mario Kart 8 can feel crowded on the screen when played in splitscreen mode, making the experience less enjoyable.
Additionally, games like Splatoon would not work well in splitscreen mode, as it could compromise the strategic elements of the game. Download play provided a solution for such scenarios, allowing friends to join in without the need for additional controllers.
The introduction of Joy-Cons expanded local co-op possibilities, but they are primarily suited for home use and simpler games. Portable consoles are more personal and can be challenging to share, making download play a desirable feature that is unlikely to return.
With the upcoming Switch 2 boasting a larger size, there may be improvements in playing games undocked with friends. However, the simplicity of sharing games effortlessly through download play is a nostalgic memory that many cherish.
While Nintendo may introduce new and innovative features with the Switch 2, some fans remain hopeful for the return of the Virtual Console. The anticipation for what Nintendo has in store for the future of gaming continues to grow, with whispers of potential surprises and enhancements to the gaming experience.
