Many iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max users have reported a peculiar issue where they hear a static or hissing noise similar to AM radio interference coming from their device’s speakers while it is charging.

The problem has sparked discussions on platforms like Reddit, the MacRumors forums, and Apple’s Support Community. Users describe the noise as static-like, akin to the sound of tuning between stations on an AM radio.

Reports have been pouring in over the past few months, and I am among the users who have encountered this issue with the iPhone 17 Pro Max. When the phone is in use, especially while charging, a noise can be heard from the speaker—resembling static, old radio interference, or walkie-talkie sounds.

Some users notice the noise when playing audio on the device and turning down the volume while charging, while others hear static even when no audio is playing through the speakers. Another group experiences a low hiss or crackle when scrolling through webpages while the phone is charging.

When the phone is plugged in and charging, try this: play any audio (a song, Instagram Reel, TikTok, etc.), turn the volume all the way down to mute, and place your ear near the bottom speaker. You’ll hear a faint static, buzzing, or hissing sound—reminiscent of an old radio.

Some users report that the noise disappears after unplugging the phone from the charger, while others hear the noise at low volumes even when the phone is not charging.

A video below demonstrates the sound that some users are hearing when they charge their phones.

The issue is not limited to a specific brand or model of charger, as users have tested different chargers, including those from Apple, and still hear the noise. The noise does not differentiate between wired and wireless chargers, with MagSafe charger users also reporting the problem, albeit at a lower volume.

One iPhone 17 Pro user mentions hearing the noise while using the Camera app:

There are two instances for me. The first is a sound coming from the back, in the middle of the camera island, when opening the Camera app. It is a constant hum that starts and stops when the Camera app is launched or closed. I recorded it by holding the phone close to the microphone of my iPad Pro, and by repeatedly opening and closing the Camera app, the hum and its absence were distinguishable. Additionally, when recording video directly on this iPhone (in quiet conditions at home), the sound is also audible during playback.

The second situation is the one mentioned earlier, a sound I refer to as a “burning candle” coming from the left speaker while charging. I also managed to record it in a similar manner as before, by plugging and unplugging the cable.

One user has reached out to Apple support, and the issue has been escalated to Apple engineers who are working on a software fix, as hardware diagnostics show no hardware problems.

While some affected iPhone owners have exchanged their devices for new ones, many are encountering the same issue with the replacement iPhone.
